What We Believe - Our Outline of Faith or Catechism

The Outline of Faith, or Catechism, is found in the Book of Common Prayer. It sets out the beliefs of the Episcopal Church in Question and Answer form

According to the Book of Common Prayer (1979 edition), the "catechism is primarily intended for use by parish priests, deacons and lay catechists, to give an outline for instruction. It is a commentary on the creeds, but is not meant to be a complete statement of belief and practice; rather, it is a point of departure for the teacher, and it is cast in the traditional question and answer form for ease of reference. The second use of this catechism is to provide a brief summary of the Church's teaching for an inquiring stranger who picks up a Prayer Book." (page 844).

The Catechism is divided into 18 separate parts:

  1. Human Nature
  2. God the Father
  3. The Old Covenant
  4. The Ten Commandments
  5. Sin and Redemption
  6. God the Son
  1. The New Covenant
  2. The Creeds
  3. The Holy Spirit
  4. The Holy Scriptures
  5. The Church
  6. The Ministry
  1. Prayer and Worship
  2. The Sacraments
  3. Holy Baptism
  4. The Holy Eucharist
  5. Other Sacramental Rites
  6. The Christian Hope
